Nurses can shape society’s future, says head of Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland

Community nurses were encouraged to realise their potential as catalysts for change by one of Scotland’s most prominent nurses.

Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS) chief executive Clare Cable told her organisation’s annual conference in Edinburgh today nurses were ‘shaping the future of society’.

‘I challenge you to find your voice – as a pioneer, as a rebel, as a social reformer,’ Ms Cable said.

Building on a rich heritage

She praised the ‘extraordinary giants’ of nursing who ‘like so much of women’s history’ were largely anonymous. And she paid tribute to campaigners for women’s education and district nursing Christian Guthrie Wright, Louisa Stevenson and Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, who were all involved in the early QNIS.

‘We are celebrating 130 years of the QNI in Scotland and we have lots to be proud of in our heritage, and to be confident about in our future.’

Clare Cable’s five tips for getting the most of your life and work

  • Connect to your ‘source’ We often find our source in stillness. Set aside the time and be disciplined to be still
  • Unleash your creativity We have these traps in our head that often come from primary school: "I’m rubbish at art," or "I can’t draw". Our creativity is bigger than that. Unleashing your creativity is about thinking differently. It enables us to think in ways we don’t habitually
  • Stay curious One of my favourite podcasts is Krista Tippett's On Being podcast. She gets amazing people to come and speak
  • Reflect deeply It is a good thing we teach reflective practice to all undergraduates. My challenge to you in your career is take that a stage further
  • Keep a journal I have found journalling immensely useful. Sometimes the stuff you write isn’t processed or filtered by your cerebral cortex. Ask yourself big questions and just write the answer
