In the Patient's Choice category, people are asked to nominate a nurse who had made a real difference to their or a loved one’s care. The public then vote on a shortlist of five inspirational stories of clinical excellence and compassionate care from across the nursing profession.

The award is sponsored by Yakult and supported by Smooth Radio.

Lesley Chan nominated the ‘wonderful and courageous’ Ms O’Toole for the comfort, support and compassion she had shown her family, even though Ms O’Toole is herself terminally ill.

Ms Chan said her whole family was delighted she had been recognised ‘for being the very special and wonderful woman, and truly dedicated nurse that she is’.

Speaking to Nursing Standard after collecting her award, Ms O'Toole said: 'It is amazing. I have only done my job. I care for children and their families as I would care for my own.'
She added: 'Hopefully this will inspire my daughter for the future. There is so much negativity in nursing now and lots of people say 'why did you let your daughter become a nurse' and I say 'I love my job and I never want to retire'.'

The other nominees for the Patient's Choice award were Karen Coutts, Nadine MacArthur, Sarah Moody and Sian Bodman.
