A new RCN council chair and returning vice chair were revealed today, who aim to ‘reconnect with members’.

The newly elected RCN council will be led by Sue Warner, who has been a nurse and manager in the NHS for 40 years, working in orthopaedics, gynaecology and paediatrics.

Ms Warner was elected chair by her fellow council members and holds the council seat for the West Midlands.

Improving conditions for nurses

‘The RCN is the leading organisation for nurses and nursing, with a great history,’ said Ms Warner in a statement.

‘Our new council will build on that, reconnecting with members and fighting to improve conditions for nursing staff so that they can provide safe and effective care, wherever they work.

‘The year ahead is a challenging one, but we will work together to deliver on these aims for members.’

Returning to the position of council vice chair is Richard Jones, who has held the post since January last year.

Mr Jones, who is also the RCN council member for Wales, said he was honoured to continue in the role and looked forward to working with the newly elected council.

Facing outward

RCN acting chief executive and general secretary Dame Donna Kinnair described the pair as a ‘powerful duo’.

‘With the elections now complete, the college can face outward to all members, the public and politicians, and invite each of those to join us in campaigning for fairer conditions and safer staffing levels,’ she said.

Most of the previous RCN council resigned in October last year following a vote of no confidence from the college’s membership, who were unhappy with how the RCN communicated the NHS pay deal in England.
