Despite being preventable and curable in most cases, TB leads to nearly one and a half million deaths worldwide every year.

Roughly three million nurses work or are registered in the 22 countries where 80% of TB cases are found, according to the ICN.

The guidelines are intended to help nurses in detecting TB cases, providing care and managing TB treatment. They also set out a nursing approach to planning and delivering patient care, aimed at improving access and quality of care throughout the treatment period.

ICN chief executive Frances Hughes said: ‘Nurses are crucial in the prevention, detection and treatment of TB and multi-drug-resistant TB.

‘These new guidelines are an important resource for nurses on the ground and will help to train experienced nurses to cascade information to nursing colleagues with the purpose of making improvements to patient care delivery.’
