Consultation launched on NMC's radical new nurse education plans

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has launched a public consultation on its long-awaited plans to ‘radically’ overhaul nurse education in the UK.

The regulator of the profession today (Tuesday 13 June) asked staff and patients to share their views on its 18-month project.
Nurses of all levels, including students, helped to design new proposals to provide more detailed understanding of mental and physical health and care.
Complex leadership roles
With a focus on public health and preparing them to prescribe early on in their careers, the plan also sees nurses work toward complex leadership roles and equips them to join multi-disciplinary and inter-agency teams.
A new education framework details outcome-focused standards for institutions and placement partners.
Covering both nursing and midwifery it is built around five areas: learning culture, educational governance and quality, student learning and empowerment, educators and curricula and assessment.
Unprecedented rate
NMC chief executive Jackie Smith said: ‘The health and care landscape is changing at an unprecedented rate and nurses and midwives are being asked to undertake more complex roles than ever before.
‘Our standards must ensure that they are able to work in ways that are not only fit for today, but also for the future.’
