An award scheme to recognise nurses and other healthcare staff who provide exceptional care to bereaved parents has been launched by actress Kym Marsh.

The Mariposa Awards, run by the bereavement care charity Mariposa Trust, include an award named in honour of Ms Marsh’s son Archie, who died at birth.

Coronation Street star Ms Marsh is one of the trust’s ambassadors.

Those eligible for the awards are nurses, midwives, bereavement midwives, doctors and community volunteers who have provided exceptional care and support to people who have experienced the loss of a baby.

Chosen by public

The categories, the first three of which will be chosen by the public, are:

  • The Compassion Award, for any medical professional who has shown genuine care and compassion for a patient who has suffered the loss of a baby.
  • The Community Award, for any medical professional, community worker, social worker, member of the clergy, teacher or member of the public who has supported someone through loss and grief.
  • The Archie Award, for any midwife who has provided exceptional care.
  • Corporate Hero, awarded to a company that has made a donation to the charity.
  • Volunteer Hero, for someone who has had a positive effect on the work of the charity.

Nominations close at 5pm on 29 March and the shortlist will be announced on 9 April. The awards will be presented at a charities ball at the Savoy Hotel in London on 28 April.
