Use of patient group directions in medicines management

Gerri Kaufman Lecturer in health sciences and continuing professional development lead, Department of health sciences, University of York

Patient group directions (PGDs) are used widely in the NHS for the supply and/or administration of medicines. Specific groups of healthcare professionals are eligible to use them, and it is essential that they understand the process for agreeing, authorising and reviewing PGDs. Knowledge of the medicines that can be included in a PGD, and the specific situations in which they can be used, is also important. Adherence to good practice recommendations and use of the competency framework produced by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence will ensure PGDs are used competently and safely.
