Health promotion in NHS walk-in centres: a literature review

Cindy Chacha-Mannie Emergency nurse practitioner, St Mary’s NHS Treatment Centre, CareUK, Portsmouth, Postgraduate school of health sciences and social work, University of Portsmouth

Cindy Chacha-Mannie looks at the care provided by these minor ailments clinics, focusing on roles and services such as disease prevention

NHS walk-in centres (WICs) were introduced in 2000 to modernise the NHS and increase accessibility to health care. They developed rapidly and have been successfully used by the public. However, little is known about their roles and services, with even less information available on their roles in health promotion and disease prevention. This review appraised the literature on health promotion services provided by WICs and minor injuries/illnesses units. It did not explore provision in other settings or programmes, such as GP surgeries or healthy living centres.
