When registering as a nurse, you must choose one of four specialisms – adult, children, learning disability or mental health nursing. Once you know where your interests lie, do some research, exploring job prospects, skills required, work environments, pay and job stress. Choose a course that fits your personality and skills. You can change your specialism later, but it is a best if you choose wisely first time.

Nurse solicitor: nurses with law degrees can represent medical professionals or initiate healthcare policy change.

Nurse informatics: nurses who specialise in medical information technology.

Lactation consultant: help new mums to breastfeed.
