My grandad had been living independently at home until a fall last year brought about a rapid decline in his health. Just before Christmas he went into the Belmont Residential Home in Longridge, near Preston, for palliative care.

There are quite a lot of negative stories in the media about care homes and the level of care that residents receive, but this could not have been further from our experience. In the few weeks that my grandad was there, he and my family received exceptional care and support.

Care assistant and deputy manager at the home Jenni Duxbury showed genuine compassion and care. A lot of our family do not live nearby, and she provided updates by phone all the time.

She spoke to my family in an honest and caring manner, went above and beyond her role, stayed late after every shift and contacted us more than we could ever have expected to keep us up to date.

When I was there with my grandad, staff always checked up on me and brought me cups of tea, making me feel cared for.

Jenni advocated on behalf of my grandad in ways I would not have been capable of, ensuring he received palliative care in a place where he was comfortable.

She does all this with no expectation of thanks and without realising how wonderful she is at her role.

Despite doing a difficult job in challenging circumstances, Jenni always has a smile on her face. The residents of the home are cared for as if they are her own relatives, and she knows them all well and always has something personal and individual to say to them.

Jenni gives so much to the job, probably more than she should. The support and care she provided made such a difference to us, making a very difficult experience much better than it might have been.
