As a nurse, a genuine thank you and acknowledgement of the work I have done from either the patients that I care for, their relatives or healthcare colleagues is far more important than anything else.

Moreover, it should be remembered that nurses do not work in isolation and effective healthcare provision involves the combined efforts of many different individuals. Those who perhaps work in behind-the-scenes clinical or administration roles work incredibly hard and are also under pressure facing many challenges but are often overlooked.

The NMC has, and individual NHS organisations should have, clear guidance and policies and when patients give nurses a box of chocolates or biscuits as a thank you, refusal may cause upset and offence. As long as small token gifts of chocolates and biscuits are managed appropriately on a local level is there really a problem?
