App review: Breast Check Now

Layla Haidrani reviews an app that encourages breast checks in women.

Created by charity Breast Cancer Now, this app encourages women to check their breasts regularly and fit it around their schedules.

The free app, devised ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, makes it easy for women to schedule breast checks.

The ‘how to check’ section includes visuals of lumps, discharges, rashes or crusting. It encourages users to follow the 'touch, look, check' routine.

The free app, devised ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also features a video of several women checking their breasts.

The most useful part of this app is the ‘your plan’ section. This helps users to set up a plan to check their breasts alongside regular sleep or exercise routines. Users can keep notes after each check, and write down whether there have been any unusual changes to be concerned about.

The app serves well as a reminder, but for anyone concerned about changes to their breasts, it is important to contact health professionals.

However, it is a useful tool that breast cancer nurses and general practice nurses can recommend to patients.

Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Also available on Android.
