Royal Shrewsbury Hospital’s Jade Myatt stopped to help the man following a car crash

Jade Myatt: ‘I suspected he was having a heart attack and needed immediate treatment’

A trainee nursing associate’s skills and quick thinking saved the life of a man involved in a car crash near her home.

Jade Myatt, who works at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital’s acute medical unit (AMU), was driving home when she came across the road accident.

The driver of the car had been taken ill at the wheel and had narrowly missed Ms Myatt’s house in Madeley, Telford, before crashing into a field.

Concerned about the driver’s condition

Ms Myatt, who is due to qualify as a nursing associate in January and wants to become a registered nurse, said: ‘I got out to make sure everyone was okay. The driver’s wife was out of the car, but a gentleman who was passing by when the accident happened said he was concerned that the driver’s breathing had changed.

‘I went to check on the driver, who was still in the car, and his breathing was very poor. I suspected he was having a heart attack and that he needed immediate treatment.’

Ms Myatt pulled the driver out of the car and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until the ambulance crew arrived, then supported them by continuing CPR.

The man later went into cardiac arrest and was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, where he was stabilised before being transferred elsewhere.

Above and beyond in any setting

The driver has since been discharged home, and paramedics said if Ms Myatt hadn’t been at the scene the outcome may have been very different.

Royal Shrewsbury Hospital AMU ward manager Hannah Pope said: ‘Jade goes above and beyond every day in her role as a trainee nursing associate, so it does not surprise me that she has done the same outside of work.

‘It goes to show how good CPR can truly save someone’s life. We are so proud to have Jade on the AMU team.’
