Online portal for nurses and other health and care staff aims to improve patient care and save clinical time
The NHS has created an online portal to offer staff clearer guidance on how to share patient information appropriately.
The Information Governance Portal covers issues such as consent to sharing, protecting confidentiality, home working and data protection.

The NHS has created an online portal to offer staff clearer guidance on how to share patient information appropriately.

‘Having the right information at the right time can save lives’
Set up by NHSX, a technology improvement body set up jointly by NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care, it is aimed at nurses and other health and care staff and includes tips for mobile messaging and video conferencing with patients or service users.
NHSX chief nursing information officer Natasha Phillips said that by making these areas clearer for nurses and other staff, the NHS could improve patient care and save clinical time.
‘Having the right information about a patient or service user at the right time can save lives,’ she said.
Dr Phillips said previous national guidance on managing and sharing information in the NHS was considered too complicated and difficult to find.
‘We want to give colleagues confidence in what the “rules” are around managing health and care information – what to share, when to share it, who to share it with – so that staff don’t fail to share information that would improve or join up a patient’s care for fear of “getting it wrong”.
‘This will prove a valuable resource for our nurses and midwives and will no doubt save them stress and time.’
