Five of the charity’s specialist nurses from across the UK accompanied patients and their families to Clarence House on 13 December for afternoon tea with Her Royal Highness.

Their young patients are being treated for conditions including epilepsy, sickle cell anaemia and haemophilia and the nurses are funded by the charity to ensure they get the right care.

The charity was founded 25 years ago in memory of the author Roald Dahl, by his wife Felicity to reflect his desire to improve the lives of others.

Working with the NHS it has so far funded 58 nurses across the UK and helped 12,000 seriously ill children and their families.

Royal support to raise awareness

The Duchess was also patron of the Roald Dahl centenary year organisation last year to mark what would have been the author’s 100th birthday.

Nurse and chief executive of the charity Jane Miles said: ‘We feel honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness as a royal patron.

‘Everything we do in the charity is directed towards making life better for seriously ill children in the UK.

‘The Duchess of Cornwall’s support will make a huge difference in raising awareness of this work and will strengthen our efforts to ensure these children live the fullest lives possible.'
