A coalition of 14 health unions is stepping up a campaign to secure a fair pay rise for NHS workers.

To mark International Thank You Day on 11 January, the 14 unions representing staff ranging from nurses to porters are urging the public to use social media to champion the vital work of all health workers by supporting a pay rise.

RCN is demanding a 12.5% pay rise for nursing staff

RCN general secretary Dame Donna Kinnair said: ‘Last year, nursing staff were buoyed by overwhelming public gratitude. Today presents a new and different way to display that same strength of feeling.

‘Healthcare staff need to hear long after today there’s public support to treat them better, recognise their skill and pay them fairly.’

The RCN is demanding a 12.5% pay rise for nursing staff on Agenda for Change contracts across the UK.

Unison is calling for each employee to receive an increase of at least £2,000 for every point on the NHS salary scale.

Unison’s head of health Sara Gorton said: ‘Everyone is relying on health workers in many different roles to see us through. Clapping has been a way of showing support, but the government now needs to pay up.’

The 14 unions, representing 1.3 million NHS employees, are asking people to share hashtags such as #FairPay and to message their MP.

A video released to mark the campaign features a diverse range of the staff who have continued to keep the NHS running through the pandemic.
