A woman who fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a nurse has been praised by her trust as she retires after 45 years of service.
Sister Marilyn Padget dedicated more than four decades to nursing patients in West Norfolk and Fenland.
Ms Padget has retired from the anticoagulation service at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King’s Lynn, where she ran nurse-led deep vein thrombosis (DVT) clinics.
She played a key role in the service being awarded 'national exemplar status’ in venous thromboembolism from NHS England.
‘You become a big family’
‘The contact with the patients is the best thing,’ said Ms Padget, reflecting on her career.
‘There have been times when it has been hard, but I would not have changed things for the world.
‘You meet so many nice people, we have a laugh, sometimes cry, but you just get on with it and become a big family.’
A career working in different specialties
After qualifying at the age of 20, Ms Padget worked in the emergency department at North Cambridgeshire Hospital for 13 years, before taking a career break to have her two sons.
‘When the youngest went to school, I decided to come back. I went on to complete my conversion course and worked in the medical assessment unit at QEH for 10 years,’ she said
Ms Padget was forced to take a six-month break while being treated for cancer, but on her return she changed specialties to work in the DVT clinics.
Recognition for ‘an angel of the NHS’
To celebrate the exceptional care she has given to patients, and her dedication to her team, Ms Padget was presented with an outstanding contribution award from Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust.
The trust’s chief executive Caroline Shaw said: ‘Marilyn has truly been an angel of the NHS by giving 45 years of dedicated service to patients in West Norfolk and Fenland.
‘She has touched countless lives during her four decades as a nurse, often going above and beyond the call of duty to support her patients.
‘It has been an honour to have a nurse of Marilyn’s calibre as part of the team here.’
