A campaign for a universal 'nurse emoji' has attracted more than 3,000 supporters.

An emoji to represent the profession would be used across social media platforms and phones. The petition was set up by nurse Laura Cain on Change.org following International Nurses Day on 12 May.

A way of recognise nursing ‘in its own right’

Ms Cain wants the Unicode Consortium, which creates emojis for use across different systems, to consider introducing a nurse emoji.

‘Currently, when you type in ‘nurse’ on your smartphone, a doctor emoji will appear,’ she wrote on Change.org.

‘I would just love to see our profession, that we are so proud and privileged to be a part of, officially recognised in its own right.’

Ms Cain included an idea for how a nurse emoji might look on her petition page.

A Unicode Consortium spokesperson said a 'healthcare worker' emoji already exists, having been added in 2019.
