Third-year children and young people’s nursing student Emma Williamson has been shortlisted for the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust’s student of the year award.

Ms Williamson was on placement at the trust from the University of Salford, when she cared for the baby.

She researched the condition and worked alongside her mentor to develop a detailed care plan for the infant, who needed regular dressing with ointments and bandages over an eight-week period.

Surprise nomination

Ms Williamson said: ‘I wasn’t expecting to get nominated for this at all – when I got the letter I thought they must have made a mistake and it was for someone else.

‘Before starting my placement I thought nursing was all about medicine and remembering the technical skills I’d been taught, but this made me realise that it’s about much more than that – a lot of it is about how you are able to interact with people and build their trust.’

Her personal tutor Gaynor Fenton praised her ‘outstanding nursing care and professionalism’, while the trust's neonatal intensive care unit matron Anne-Marie White said Ms Williamson ‘demonstrated exceptional commitment, integrity and professionalism’.

The awards ceremony will be held on 27 October.
