A partnership between a nursing home and a primary school is helping to dispel myths about caring for older people.

The project involving Saint Cecilia’s Nursing Home and Wheatcroft Community Primary School, both in Scarborough, enables pupils to learn about empathy and compassion.

Creative activities

The children have joined the home’s residents for activities such as arts and crafts, reading and singing.

Saint Cecilia’s managing director Mike Padgham said residents had greatly benefited from the collaboration.

‘They love having the children visit. They look forward to it and find it stimulating and rewarding. I hope the children gain a lot more from it too,’ he said.

‘Effect on children has been immense’

Wheatcroft headteacher Jenny Hartley said: ‘It has been wonderful to see the relationship between our school and Saint Cecilia's grow over this year.

‘The positive impact on our pupils has been immense, with their confidence increasing, as well as their empathy and compassion.

‘It was lovely to see the delight on the residents’ faces, as well as our pupils’, as they shared conversation and cake. I am delighted to see many of our pupils are keen to be involved in visits next year.’
