Nurse Kate Barmby has insisted she is 'still smiling' after becoming the latest contestant to leave the Great British Bake Off.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust acute respiratory nurse become the fourth baker to eliminated in last night's show.

Bake falls flat

The batter week theme proved to be Ms Barmby’s undoing after her churros (crispy deep-fried pastries) fell short with judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Ms Barmby took to Twitter after the episode aired, writing: ‘Sad my #GBBO adventure is over but so pleased to have been one of this year's bakers.

'Can't wait to watch my friends continue their journey.’

Responding to one user who said how much they’d wanted her to win she wrote: ‘That's kind but batter wasn't my week and you're only as good as your last bake on Bake Off. It's tough but it makes good TV.’

After being inundated with messages of support and expressions of sadness at her loss she added: ‘Thank u all for your kindness. I'm not crying that I've been knocked out but smiling that I was chosen to be part of #GBBO 2016 at all.’
