According to the TV hit show’s website, mother of two Kate Barmby is a farmer’s daughter from Norfolk and works at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust .

She will enter the famous white tent alongside 11 other contestants -– including a jet engineer, a church pastor and a hairdresser – hoping to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.

Fresh produce

Kate boasts a passion for baking that began as a child on the farm, where she still gathers the fruit and seasonal produce she uses in her tasty creations.

The TV programme films amateur bakers attempting different challenges set by the judges each weekend; they return to their normal lives during the week.

Details of who gets knocked out of the competition each week are a closely guarded secret ahead of the respective episode’s transmission – as is the identity of the eventual champion.

Sweet ambition

Kate will be hoping her flair for sugar craft will serve her well, especially in the famous show-stopper segments of the competition.

Mr Hollywood believes the success of last year’s winner Nadiya Hussain has raised the bar again for this year’s hopefuls.

The Great British Bake Off begins on Wednesday 24 August on BBC One at 8pm.
