The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is looking for two lay people to join its governing council.

The nurse regulator’s governing body has lay as well as registrant members: Barney Newman

Under the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001, the council must comprise six registrant and six lay members, and have representation from all four UK countries.

The vacancies have arisen as a result of the departure of Quinton Quayle and Amerdeep Somal who had served as lay members of the council since May 2013.

UK-wide representation

The role is open to lay candidates from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England who have not or have never been, a registered nurse or midwife, and do not hold qualifications that would entitle them to apply for registration.

NMC council chair Janet Finch said: ‘These are challenging and rewarding roles influencing an important public protection agenda in a sector that is changing at a pace we have not seen before.

‘The council has set an ambitious strategy to be a dynamic and innovative regulator. We have already begun an exciting programme of transformation to help us achieve this and deliver better value for money.

‘Council members will play a vital role in shaping and delivering our plans. We are looking for individuals of outstanding calibre with experience and expertise particularly in large-scale organisational change either in the public or private sector.’

Applications close on 6 February.
