NMC appoints new council members for 'exciting period of change'
Two new council members have been appointed to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

NMC audit committee chair Marta Phillips and former Labour MP Sir Hugh Bayley joined the council as lay members from this month.
Two registrant members – nurse Maura Devlin and midwife Lorna Tinsley – have been reappointed by the Privy Council for three-year terms, from the start of May.
'Great asset'
NMC chair Professor Dame Janet Finch said she was delighted with all the appointments. She said Ms Phillips and Sir Hugh’s ‘knowledge, experience and expertise will be a great asset during this busy but exciting period of change for the NMC’.
The council is the governing body of the NMC, setting its strategic direction and the standards by which registered nurses and midwifes must work.
Ms Phillips will continue as independent chair of the audit committee.
She has significant financial experience and has held senior executive public sector positions as well as a range of non-executive roles.
She was awarded an OBE in 2006 for services to social housing. Sir Hugh was MP for York (Central) for 23 years and has held ministerial posts and been president of NATO. His services to NATO and international development led to a knighthood in 2015.
