A series of four short films have been launched to help nurses and other health professionals safeguard and care for women and girls affected by female genital mutilation (FGM).

Comfort Momoh MBE, midwife and FGM/public health specialist at Guy's and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London is interviewed on the new training videos

The YouTube clips have been produced by the Department of Health after a legal duty for nurses, doctors and other health and social care professionals to report cases of FGM came into force in England and Wales on 31 October 2015.

The first video features women sharing their personal experiences of FGM and how they think nurses and doctors should provide the best care and support.

Mandatory reporting

In the second video, NHS staff discuss the mandatory reporting duty, including how it applies to all health and social care workers and how to manage situations faced while treating patients.

Mental health specialists outline the effect FGM has on the mental health of women and girls in the third video, while the fourth provides training tips for healthcare students.

Figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (now called NHS Digital) show there were 5,700 newly recorded cases of FGM in England during 2015-16.
