Memorial service for heroic nurse Kirsty Boden killed in London terror attack
A nurse who died in the London Bridge terror attack has been honoured with a moving memorial service in her native Australia
A nurse who died in the London Bridge terror attack has been honoured with a moving memorial service in her native Australia.
Kirsty Boden ran to help others during the attack on London Bridge and nearby Borough Market in June.
Friends and family gathered for the memorial at Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club in Sydney last week.
Ms Boden, who was a senior staff nurse in theatres recovery at Guy’s Hospital in London, had been a volunteer at the club before moving to the UK.
Tribute
Surf lifesavers paddled into the ocean off Tamarama Beach. The party then released sunflowers into the waves as music played on the shore.
Local mayor Sally Betts read a tribute from Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, who said 'you find Australia at its very best' at surf clubs, the Daily Telegraph in Sydney reported.
'Here is a group of men and women who go into danger to help strangers,' Mr Turnbull wrote.
'The best of Australia'
'On that awful night, when Kirsty Boden ran towards the injured and the dying to render aid, she showed the world the best of our Australian character.'
Last month, Guy's and St Thomas' chief nurse Dame Eileen Sills paid tribute to Ms Boden. She said: 'Kirsty was an outstanding nurse, described by her colleagues as one in a million who always went the extra mile for the patients in her care.'
Ms Boden's funeral was held last month in the town of Loxton in South Australia.
