The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is searching for a new chief executive to provide ‘visionary leadership and management’ to guide the organisation.

Potential candidates must be a registered nurse and have credibility as an established leader with a successful record.

Former ICN chief executive Frances Hughes left the organisation  due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’ in August last year after 18 months in the post.

Before her appointment, former New Zealand chief nurse Dr Hughes was a consultant for the World Health Organization.

ICN about to launch a major nursing campaign

Thomas Kearns, who developed a programme to regulate the registration of overseas nurses wishing to practice in Ireland, has been acting as ICN interim chief executive since October 2017.

The recruitment process comes as the ICN prepares to launch the Nursing Now! campaign to raise the status and profile of nursing globally.

It is being led by former NHS chief executive Nigel Crisp and will conclude with a progress report in 2020 as part of the celebrations of the bicentenary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

The deadline for applications is 2 March, but the organisation said the search will remain open until the best candidate has been selected.
