Free COVID-19 infection control guide for nursing and residential care homes
Infection Prevention Society outlines signs and symptoms and how to prevent spread of coronavirus in ‘overlooked’ care settings
Staff at nursing and residential care homes can now access a free guide on COVID-19 infection prevention control.
The Infection Prevention Society (IPS) has brought together all national COVID-19 infection prevention advice specifically for staff working in residential care settings.
Spotting the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 – and how to help prevent its spread
It outlines what COVID-19 is, signs and symptoms, how it can spread, and how its spread can be prevented.
The guide, which can be downloaded from the IPS website, also includes information on:
- Hand hygiene.
- How to put on and take off personal protective equipment (PPE), and what type of PPE to wear in which situation.
- Isolating residents with known or suspected COVID-19.
- Managing residents’ washing and waste.
- Visits from relatives for residents receiving end of life care.
- Staff staying safe at work and at home.
Free guide can also be used as training aid
Society vice-president Jennie Wilson told Nursing Standard that IPS members have acknowledged ‘the value of having this resource to enable them to support those working in residential care settings’.
She added the guide can be used as an aid for internal training sessions.
Professor Wilson, who is also a professor of healthcare epidemiology at the University of West London, said the guide was created because the residential setting is often overlooked.
She stressed the guide is not new information, but rather existing Public Health England guidance collated into one document, and will be updated if national guidance changes.
