Kathy Abernethy will become chair of the British Menopause Society in July.

Northwick Park Hospital senior nurse specialist Kathy Abernethy is the first nurse to hold the post since the charity was founded.

She will take up her position in July at the society’s annual conference.

Aspirations

Ms Abernethy said she was looking forward to the challenge that chairing a multidisciplinary society would bring.

She said: ‘I am sure that my expertise from working in the award-winning menopause service at Northwick Park Hospital will stand me in good stead.

‘I aspire to see all women, wherever they are in the UK, have access to the great menopause care that we offer.’

Ms Abernethy treats women with complex menopause needs, including young women, those with cancer and those with complicated medical needs.

She has also initiated a menopause education programme for nurses and visits workplaces to discuss the impact of menopause on women at work.

'One of our own'

London North West Healthcare NHS Trust chief nurse Amanda Pye said the appointment was testament to ‘the commitment and dedication’ of Ms Abernethy.

‘We are incredibly fortunate to call Kathy one of our own and I wish her well in her new role.’
