Two high street food chains are offering free drinks as a thank you to nurses and other NHS staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pret a Manger announced that health service workers will be entitled to hot drinks free of charge at all of its UK branches, as well as 50% off all other items.

Gratitude for vital services

Pret’s chief operating officer Pano Christou said: ‘Thank you for all that you are doing. We look forward to serving you.’

McDonald’s has said it will offer a free hot or cold drink to all NHS staff and emergency service workers while its restaurants remain open.

To receive the offer, staff need to show their work ID at any branch.

Mc Donald’s UK and Ireland chief executive Paul Pomroy said: ‘It is a small token of our appreciation for everything that these services are doing.

‘We will continue to keep this under review as government and health authority guidance develops.’

Seating areas closed to help curb the spread of infection

Both chains have also announced they will be operating as a takeaway service only, with seating areas closed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Retailer WHSmith said it would be doubling its NHS staff discount on food and drinks to 20% in all of its hospital stores from Thursday.
