A best practice guide to child immunisation has been published for nurses.

The Managing Childhood Immunisation Clinics guide was produced by the RCN to reduce errors in general practice and support efficient implementation of vaccination programmes.

It provides advice on how nurses can avoid common errors such as vaccinating the wrong child, administering an adult vaccine to a child, vaccinating the wrong sibling, and what to do if things go wrong.

Evidence-based immunisation practice to meet national minimum standards

RCN professional lead for public health nursing Helen Donovan said: ‘All practitioners involved in immunisation should be able to demonstrate current, evidence-based, best practice-based knowledge and understanding in accordance with the national minimum immunisation standards.

‘This checklist provides essential tips to nurses responsible for administering vaccines in child immunisation clinics and will help to reduce the margin of error in future.’
