Awards recognising excellence in the transition of the care of children to adult bladder and bowel services have been launched.

The Paediatric Continence Forum – a national campaign group – and the hygiene and health company Essity are offering the awards.

Improvements in services

The forum was launched in  2003 to campaign for improvements in continence services for children and young people. Members include nurses, paediatricians, charities and professional bodies, including the RCN, the School and Public Health Nurses Association and the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association.

Award applications will be considered from people working with children, adults or from a combination of both. They will need to show excellence in applying the National Institute for Health and Excellence quality standards.

Applications close on 22 November and winners are due to be announced in January 2020.

Forum chair Penny Dobson said around 900,000 children and young people in the UK experience continence problems.

Neglected area of child health

‘These can be bedwetting, daytime wetting or constipation/soiling, or a combination of all three,’ she said. ‘They occur at a formative time for children and can affect their health, well-being and emotional development. Most are treatable, but community-based NHS treatment services vary hugely across the country.

‘This situation causes a common “disconnect” as young people transition from child to adult services.

‘We are excited to be part of this new award scheme, which will encourage and support good practice in this often neglected area of child health.’
