The writer of The Language of Kindness: A Nurse’s Story chose the number of steps estimated to be the number hospital nurses typically take in a 12-hour shift.

The walk on 6 July will begin outside the London offices of her publisher and finish at RCN headquarters.

Ms Watson, a former children’s intensive care nurse, has already raised £1,000 more than her £1,500 target.

'Biggest users of pay day loans'

She said: ‘Nurses are struggling like never before. NHS staff are the biggest users of pay-day lenders. We must all shout out for nurses and for patients.’

All proceeds will go to the RCN Foundation, which helps nurses facing hardship by providing advice and support. The charity also invests in learning and development opportunities.
