Actors take centre stage in emergency department trauma training

Emergency department staff were put through their paces at Doncaster Royal Infirmary during a new trauma course.

The trauma intermediate life support training was aimed at refreshing the skills emergency practitioners need when patients present with rare but serious injuries.

Using actors with mock injuries, staff reacted to scenarios such as an older, confused patient with a chest injury, suspected broken ribs, bruising and bleeding, and a person who had broken their leg having fallen from a horse.

Building confidence

Mark Holland, emergency department nursing student and clinical support worker, said: ‘The training was a fantastic experience. It was enjoyable and boosted my confidence in my skills and competence. The course is great for anyone wanting to recap and improve their clinical and communication skills, as well as their knowledge and confidence.’

Director of education at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Alasdair Strachan said the training had been well received.

The trust, which is part of the South Yorkshire Trauma Network, will be offering the training course to its emergency staff and those from other hospitals in the region over the next few months.
