This article discusses how an appreciation of the sources of selfconfidence can help improve motivation and performance at work

Aims and intended learning outcomes This article aims to introduce a number of concepts from management literature in order to demonstrate how these relate to some of the skills involved in patient care, and to illustrate their relevance to nurses in their work with others - be they managers, peers, or those for whom they are managerially responsible. At the end of this article you should be able to:

Explain the impact of self-confidence on motivation and performance

Understand the sources of self-confidence and how you can use them to improve your performance at work

Delegate effectively

Understand the importance of feedback

Appreciate what motivates people and adjust your language to suit individuals’ needs.
