The aim of this article is to develop nurses’ knowledge and skills to enable them to assess a child with continence problems. After reading this article you should be able to:

Identify the key factors of childhood incontinence.

Discuss the psycho-social effects incontinence may have on the child and his or her family.

Undertake an assessment of incontinence using appropriate questioning techniques.

Discuss the management of different continence problems.
