The implications of Credit Accumulation and Transfer Schemes for the nursing profession are discussed in this article, the first of two on the subject. The recognised levels and scoring systems are described. While the schemes offer many opportunities to help nurses achieve higher academic status, they are neither a panacea for the problems of education nor a short and easy route to academic qualifications.
