This article discusses how a person might perceive his or her body image and how the effects of cancer can contribute to alteration of that image, so that nurses are in a better position to support clients/patients and their relatives

Aim and intended learning outcomes

The aim of this article is to provide a clear overview of altered body image, sufficient for you to make a competent assessment of the patient’s problems and to formulate a plan of cancer nursing care. After reading this article you should be able to:

Distinguish clearly between normal and altered body image

Identify cancer-related factors that may significantly contribute to the formation of an altered body image problem

Explain how altered body image may develop after illness and treatment

Organise an assessment strategy to help you to examine the patient’s circumstances

Work with patients and relatives to arrange appropriate action plans.
