The number of foreign-trained nursing staff working in the UK has increased rapidly over the past few years, with the NHS and social care services relying on nurses from overseas to help address chronic staffing shortages.
Almost 50% of new registrants are international nurses
Data from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) shows that almost half of nurses and midwives who joined the UK register between April and September 2022 were from abroad, with most trained in India, the Philippines or Nigeria.
