Should newly registered nurses begin their careers on band 6?

The RCN has proposed that newly registered nurses (NRNs) start their NHS careers on band 6 with a salary of more than £37,000. Some support the idea as a way to attract and retain nursing staff but others wonder if the responsibility would be too much and progression to band 6 after preceptorship might be more appropriate. Others feel that beginning at band 5 allows new nurses to develop their skills. Nursing Standard asks its readers’ panel what they think.
