It could be you: Nursing Older People seeks consultant editor

Role covers providing strategic direction and guidance on Nursing Older People content with support of editor and editorial advisory board, deadline is 30 June

Nursing Older People is published online first and in print six times a year by RCNi

Your journal needs you

Nursing Older People, the specialist journal for professionals working in gerontological care, is seeking a consultant editor. This is an external position that involves providing strategic direction and guidance on journal content, supported by the editor and editorial advisory board (EAB). An annual honorarium, plus reasonable expenses incurred attending events or meetings in the consultant editor role, are available.

Nursing Older People is published online first and in print six times a year by RCNi. It publishes general clinical articles, original research and continuing professional development articles, among other content. The consultant editor will be an expert in the field who has an interest in publishing high-quality content for a practitioner audience and a good network of contacts.

Overview of the consultant editor role

The overall aim of the post is to help the journal develop to meet the future needs of its readers, nurses caring for older people in a variety of clinical settings. This means helping to ensure that Nursing Older People provides the content (articles, podcasts and webinars) that practising nurses need and which will ensure the continuing relevance of the journal.

We are keen to increase the number of submissions to the journal in clinical and professional subject areas. This means increasing the number of peer-reviewed articles we receive. The consultant editor is the champion of the journal, identifying and recruiting new authors and promoting the benefits of writing for the journal.

The post holder has the support of the editorial team, and will work closely with the journal editor. EAB members are expected to play a significant role in driving up submissions and the consultant editor will play a leadership role in this respect.

Other aspects of the consultant editor role

Other aspects of the role include:

  • Reviewing peer-reviewed content, including article series.
  • Adjudicating on reviews for articles where necessary.
  • Planning content for future issues with the editor.
  • Identifying topics for coverage, including those that may lend themselves to webinars and podcasts.
  • Talent spotting potential EAB members and reviewers.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the journal at all times.
  • Using social media to promote the journal’s content.
  • Writing an editorial for six print issues.

Contact with the team mostly involves telephone and email correspondence with the editor and a monthly virtual or physical catch up with the editor is encouraged. We hold an annual virtual EAB meeting lasting an hour, which the consultant editor is expected to attend. Time commitment is likely to be between one to three days a month.

How to apply

If you are interested in applying for the role please send me (Lisa Berry) a CV and indicate how you feel your professional experience and outlook would prepare you and how you would see your role developing. You are encouraged to express your professional opinion on the journal content and its development. The deadline is 30 June 2022.
