The news that almost half of nurses and midwives joining the UK register in the year to March 2022 were from overseas is shocking.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) data show 23,408 out of the 48,436 first-time registrants trained overseas – and this reliance on recruitment from abroad comes at the same time as record numbers are leaving the NMC register.
