Chief executive of the American National Council of State Boards of Nursing and former chief executive of the International Council of Nurses David Benton received the honour from the Spanish General Council of Nursing in Barcelona, Spain, last month.

Mr Benton, who trained in Scotland, was rewarded for his work highlighting the importance of nursing and of strong regulation in the profession.

He was the winner of the inaugural Nursing Standard Leadership award, and he has received various fellowships for his contribution to health and nursing policy throughout his career.

Mr Benton said: ‘I am honored to receive this prestigious award. I am delighted that the importance of regulation is recognised as this reinforces the role it plays in shaping our profession, and in meeting the needs of those we serve in this complex, dynamic and digital age.’
