RCN chief temporarily steps back from role after cycling accident
General secretary Dame Professor Donna Kinnair on sick leave to recover from injuries
RCN Northern Ireland director Pat Cullen takes over during Dame Professor Donna Kinnair’s absence
RCN general secretary and chief executive Dame Professor Donna Kinnair has temporarily stepped back from her role after a cycling accident.
Professor Kinnair will be on extended sick leave in the coming weeks until she recovers from her injuries.
RCN Northern Ireland director Pat Cullen has stepped up to take on the acting leadership role in Professor Kinnair’s absence.
In a statement on the RCN website, Ms Cullen shared the news of the accident: ‘No one will be surprised to hear that Donna’s first response was to praise the nursing staff who looked after her in hospital. I know I speak for all our members when I wish Donna a full and speedy recovery.’

She added: ‘In my acting role, I will lead the staff, working with council, to ensure we continue to support members and raise the issues that matter most to you.’
Ms Cullen takes on the leadership role as the college prepares to hold a virtual march on Downing Street on 22 April as part of its Fair Pay For Nursing campaign to achieve a 12.5% pay rise for UK nursing staff.
Ms Cullen is no stranger to pay disputes having led the RCN in Northern Ireland during a series of work to rule and industrial action events in 2019 and 2020.
