She said: 'I very much encourage you to support Cavell Nurses’ Trust and get involved in the 10k For Nurses and Midwives challenge in this the Year of The Nurse and Midwife.

'Please join hundreds of nurses, midwives and many others by taking on your own 10k-themed challenge and raise funds for a very worthy cause.'

Cavell Nurses' Trust has provided record levels of assistance

Previous years have seen fundraisers’ walk 10,000 steps, run, hike or swim 10km, sky-dive from 10,000ft or take on a unique challenge for 10,000 seconds.

More than 500 fundraisers have already signed up to lend their support.

Since March, the Cavell Nurses' Trust has provided record levels of assistance.

In July, the amount of funding given out needed to be six times higher than that given in February, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust fundraising manager John Harrison explained: 'This year has been incredibly challenging for nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants.

'Money raised through 10k For Nurses and Midwives will come at a crucial time with Cavell Nurses’ Trust facing record levels of applications for help this year.

'It will also help meet this increased need right now, and also help to build the foundation for long-term support for these professions in the future.'
