A registered nurse who has been crowned the winner of The Voice UK 2022 said she hopes to follow her dreams as a singer while continuing her career in nursing.

Anthonia Edwards, who applied for the talent programme as a nursing student, said during the ITV series that some of the songs she had written were inspired by ‘hard times’ working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Record contract for London nurse after show-stopping performance

Having been mentored by Welsh singing legend Sir Tom Jones, Ms Edwards was announced as the series 11 winner on Saturday night, after a show-stopping performance of ‘When the Party’s Over’ by Billie Eilish.

Despite scooping a record contract, the London nurse said she had not given up on her nursing career. ‘Winning The Voice was unexpected, but really welcome at this stage in my life,’ she said. ‘I'm a registered nurse, but I get to explore this side of myself right now. It’s really cool and I’m super grateful for the opportunity. I’m looking forward to the journey that lies ahead.’

In the final Ms Edwards defeated David Adeogun, who was coached by Olly Murs, to achieve coach Sir Tom’s third win on the show. Sir Tom and Ms Edwards later performed a duet of the James Brown song ‘It’s a Man’s Man’s Man's World’. Ms Edwards’ debut single will be a cover of the Justin Bieber track ‘Anyone’.

‘She had something really special’: respect from Sir Tom Jones

Sir Tom said: ‘I am so proud to be crowning this year’s winner, Anthonia. Her voice and talent rose above a competitive field and speaks for itself, so I am by no means surprised she is our series 11 winner.

‘When I first heard her in the blind auditions, I knew she had something really special; having the opportunity to work with her this series has been nothing but joy from beginning to end. She deserves much respect for her abilities and work ethic, so I’m excited for her future.’
