New short films show ‘what a great profession nursing is’

Promotional videos show newly qualified nurses talking of pride in their new career
Newly qualified nurses have shared the reasons they became a nurse in a series of videos designed to encourage more people into the profession.
Adult community staff nurse Craig Davidson appears in one of the short films, which have been produced by the RCN’s Newly Registered Nurse network.
‘Nurses want to make a difference,’ he says in the video. ‘We all want life to be better for the people we see. The most rewarding part is, without a doubt, being able to make a tangible difference to their lives.’
The RCN has released a preview of what to expect in the videos:
‘Every day is different, which is why I love it so much’
Common themes spoken about in the films include the variety of work nurses undertake, the importance of teamwork and the pride they feel in being a nurse.
Surgical theatre nurse Lynsey McLaughlin, who is based in Northern Ireland, says: ‘Every day is different, which is why I love it so much. We learn so much from our colleagues. It’s always very busy, but that’s what I like about it.’
Community nurse Clare Manley, who works at Pennine Care NHS Trust, says: ‘One of the things that patients have really struggled with during Covid is getting out and about. So it’s great to be able to meet them and talk them through some techniques for dealing with their anxiety.’
Videos illustrate the benefits of working in nursing
The videos have been released at a time when NHS nursing staff face huge pressures due to patient backlogs and rising numbers of COVID-19 cases.
Chair of the RCN professional nursing committee Rachel Hollis said: ‘The journey to becoming a registered nurse is always a challenge, made even tougher by the pandemic. But it has created opportunities too, and inspired those who are joining the workforce now.
‘I hope the testimonies given by the six newly qualified nurses featured in these films demonstrate what a great profession nursing is to be a part of.’
The six films will be officially launched at an online event on 7 December at 6pm.
