An image of an exhausted midwife has gone viral and is a stark portrayal of the effect on the individual of long hours and intense workload.

The photograph shows United States-based labour and delivery nurse Caty Nixon after working 53 hours over four days.

To date, the post has been shared on Facebook 95,000 times and has had 154,000 likes.

A reminder of the challenges nurses face

It was shared last week by Ms Nixon's twin sister Laura McIntyre after a ‘particularly hard day’ at work.

Ms McIntyre thanked her sister and other nurses and reminded everyone of the work nurses do.

Ms Nixon told Good Morning America she thinks the post was popular because it showed ‘raw emotion’.

‘I don't like being in the spotlight, and I love that Laura wrote a tribute to not only me but to all nurses for our passion and dedication, even through the roughest days.’

She said the best part of nursing is making connections with people, but the worst is when a life is lost and as a nurse you feel ‘you have to be strong for your patient when on the inside, you are falling apart’.
