Nursing students are being asked to take part in a new study exploring the impact of COVID-19 on nurse education.
The UK-wide COV-ed Nurse Study will investigate the experiences of nursing students on placement in the NHS before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Findings will help prepare nursing students for future pandemics
Researchers want to hear from second and third-year nursing students across the UK. Participants will complete a survey and record a series of audio diaries over a period of 18 months, detailing their day-to-day experiences.
They will then take part in in-depth interviews with the research team.
One of the study’s first participants, Ulster University second-year adult nursing student Eimer Coster, told Nursing Standard she hopes the findings will help to ensure nurse education and nursing students are prepared for future pandemics.
‘My message to other nursing students would be to stand up and be heard,’ she said.

Students helping to shape nurse education policy
The study, a partnership between seven universities and led by the Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery at Oxford Brookes University, is backed by a £618,324 grant from the Economic and Social Research Council as part of UK Research and Innovation’s rapid response to COVID-19.
Swansea University second year adult nursing student Matt Townsend said taking part in the study is about nursing students ‘playing an active part in the shape of educational policy in the future’.
Director of the Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery and the study's principal investigator Mary Malone said nursing students are a vital part of the response to the pandemic.
‘It’s essential we understand more about how effective their educational experiences were in preparing them for this huge challenge,’ she said.
