Nurses are being urged to swim, run, bake or do all they can this October to support current and retired colleagues experiencing hardship, which may range from financial difficulties to domestic abuse.

In 2017, the annual #10kForNurses campaign by the Cavell Nurses’ Trust raised £15,000, exceeding its £10,000 target.

The trust's fundraising manager Victoria Lewis said: ‘The hardship that nurses often face is widespread and on the increase.’

The Cavell Nurses’ Trust has seen a 100% rise in nurses asking for support over the past three years, having received 2,200 requests for help from nurses in 2017, compared with 1,100 in 2014.

Ms Lewis said this increase is partly due to increased awareness among nurses of the help the trust can offer.

Get involved

She emphasised the many ways in which people can contribute to the #10kForNurses campaign: ‘Anyone can get involved and do 10k their way in October – run, bike, walk or swim.

‘There are also two new activities – a skydiving day in Northamptonshire on 6 October, and a trek up Mount Snowdon in Wales on 13 October.

‘But you don’t have to be an active type – you can do 10,000 of anything. For example, you could bake 10,000 calories and sell them in a cake sale.’
